In January, 2019 we started the slow but satisfying process of listing Eytan's inventory on-line so that he can semi-retire and focus on custom designs. Please check back as we're listing new items every week -- all fine jewelry in a range of styles and all priced with an emphasis on fairness and realism! China started issuing gold panda coins in 1982 and they've put out a new design every year since (with the exception of 2001, a year that will live in panda-lover infamy). Our coin is from the first year of panda coin production and it's the smallest weight offered at the time - 1/10 of an ounce (3.10 grams). The coin's diameter is just under 18mm. The coin features a panda holding a branch of bamboo on one side and the Temple of Heaven on the back. The images are printed with the same north-south orientation so you can wear the pendant with either image facing forward and the image will be right side up. The writing is all in Chinese except for "99.9%" (referring to the gold purity) written on the front, and the issuing year of 1982 written on the back. The frame is a simple coin bezel with reeded edges and a top tension screw to hold the coin in place. It is not stamped but we guarantee it to be 14 karat gold. The total length of the pendant is just over 1.0, including the bale. The width is a little over 18mm (just under 3/4).

The total pendant weight is 4 grams, of which 0.89 grams is 14K and the remainder is 24K. Each year's design comes in different weights. Initially, the smallest coin was 1/10oz (like our coin), but in 1983 a 1/20oz coin was added.

The largest coins are a full troy ounce of pure (0.999%) gold. The 1982 1/10oz coin was originally tied to a denomination of 10 yuan, but this was adjusted to 50 yuan in 2001. Our coin is from the first year of panda production and it remains an iconic design. Collectors note a variation on this coin: the short leaf. The leaf in question is the one closest to the left-hand edge of the coin. Our coin has a long leaf. This item is in the category "Jewelry & Watches\Fine Jewelry\Necklaces & Pendants".
